Kitchen Science: Defying Gravity!

The other day I found this amazing thing in the freezer, a stalagmite of ice! I guess it happened because of the way water expands when it freezes, but I don't know why it would make such a distinct formation like this. Any ideas?

  1. I'm thinking maybe there was a little earth quake right at the point of freezing? Or maybe the electrically attracted things in the water were attracted to some magnetic force up above?
Ha, I have no idea. But I've seen my ice do that before too. Weird.
